Attached you'll find information about an upcoming very 'hot' event:

We'll be building a Rumford fireplace as well as a rocket mass oven with a heated bed and a very long bench at an amazing beautiful location in the forest by Zensee, some 90 km from Berlin. We'll also make an earthen bread/pizza oven, start a cob structure and likely some initial layers for an earthen floor. The workshop may appear expensive, however there's plenty of discounts for early registrations, couples/groups etc.

Cob is an old English word for a building material which is a mixture of straw and sand/clay, and it was 're-discovered' by Ianto Evans of the Cob Cottage Company. (All 3 of the workshop facilitators learnt cobbing straight from Ianto). Ianto also developed the rocket mass oven, which is one of the most effective ways to burn wood to heat mass. It burns like a rocket, and it seriously  provokes you to rethink everything you ever thought you knew about fire; drafts, chimneys, etc. It's all outlined in this book, which also is available as a pdf. We will be creating an extremely long Rocket Mass Heating bench.

When Count Rumford returned to London many years ago, he found that the city was unbearably smoky. Consequently, he set about developing a vastly superior design for the traditional open-hearth fireplace. With the Rumford fireplace, the 3 walls reflect a maximum of the heat into the room, while the 'throat' circulates the wood-gasses (thereby eliminating a great deal of the smoke). The Rumford that we will make is made from a few fire bricks and cob, which allows for a lot of creativity in the design.

Last but not least: Cob is a wonderful material, but very labour intensive as it's usually mixed by feet; in the olden days by the hooves of horses, in modern times by the feet of dancing people. We will be doing the mud dance, however we will also have a premiere in Germany of the Czech invented cob machine.

Im Anhang findet ihr Informationen über eine demnächst statt findende "heiße" Veranstaltung. Wir werden einen Rumfordofen, als auch eine "Rocket"-Masseheizung mit einem beheizten Bett und einer sehr langen Bank an einem einmalig schönen Ort am Zenssee, 90km nördlich von Berlin, bauen. Auch ein Brot-/Pizzaofen ist geplant, wir werden eine "Cob"-Struktur und vermutlich noch die Anfangsschichten eines Lehmfussbodens beginnen. Der Kurs scheint auf den ersten Blick teuer, aber es gibt jede Menge Rabatt für Frühanmeldung, Paare, Gruppen usw.

“Cob” ist ein altes englisches Wort für ein Baumaterial, das eine Mischung aus Stroh und Lehm/Sand ist, und wurde von Ianto Stevens von der “Cob Cottage Company” wiederentdeckt. (Unsere 3 Anleiter haben “cobbing” direkt von Ianto gelernt) Ianto hat auch die “Rocket”- Masseheizung (“rocket mass oven”) entwickelt, die eine der effektivsten Methoden ist, Holz zu verbrennen, um damit Materie aufzuheizen. Ein Verbrennungsvorgang ähnlich dem einer Rakete wird dich alles überdenken lassen, was du über Feuer, Zug, Kamine usw. weißt. Es wird in dem empfohlenen Buch beschrieben, das auch als .pdf erhältlich ist. Wir werden eine extrem lange “Rocket”- Masseheizungsbank bauen.

Als Reichsgraf von Rumford (der auch in Munchen und Paris wirkte) Ende des 18. Jh. nach London zurückkehrte, empfand er die Stadt als unerträglich verräuchert. Daraufhin entwickelte er ein weit überlegenes Design für den traditionellen offenen Kamin. Im “Rumfordofen” reflektieren 3 Wände ein Maximum an Hitze in den Raum, während im Rauchfang die Holzgase zirkulieren (wobei ein großer Teil des Rauchs beseitigt wird). Wir werden unseren Rumford aus ein paar Feuerziegeln und “Cob” herstellen, was Raum für viel Kreativität beim Design lässt.

Nicht zu vergessen, “Cob” ist ein wundervolles Material, aber sehr arbeitsintensiv, weil es normalerweise mit den Füßen gemischt wird, früher von den Hufen der Pferde, heute von den Füßen tanzender Menschen. Wir werden im Lehm tanzen, aber auch die deutsche Premiere der tschechischen “Cob”-Maschine.
