Permalot's job opportunities description

Camp Manager:

We need someone to manage the various camps.

The job consists of: Taking part in setting up the camp, learning about the infra stucture and the basic rules for camps in PermaLot. Being availabe on site while the camp is rented to 3rd parties; arranging with the cook about shopping, the water system, changing the gas bomb and advicing the users about everything from where to find firewood, how to light the oil lamps, how to clean the bathrooms, wash the dishes, charge the mobiles etc. In addition the person should take care of the little permaculture vegie garden, which supplies some vegies for the camp. -Most of the other food gets delivered direct to camp from ProBio or Natural.
The job includes handling the various volunteers who show up during the summer. You may chose not to accept any volunteers and you set the terms for them to stay: What to pay, hours to work etc. It also means general maintenance of the whole area, ensuring it's presentable. (Grass!).

Pay:
The job can be paid with around 9.000 per week of rented camp. (incl. taxes etc.): Minimum requirement is 4 weeks of management; even with no camp happening.
If motivated you may want to rent the camp from PermaLot for 25.000 week (up to 25 people) incl. cook and food; arrange your own event, teachers etc. You'll be able to profit 25-35.000, depending on what your participants can pay and your external expenses.

Camp Cook:

We need someone to cook delicious vegetarian food for the various events in our camp.

As a camp cook you’ll only be working when the camp is rented out for events with between 15-30 people. The job consists of: Composing a menu which encorporates seasonal and national organic vegetarian food, administrating the purchase and budgetting. We usually get most of the food delivered direct to camp from Ales Horak, ProBio or Natural.

During the camps you’ll administer a couple of volunteers to help you cook and clean, and together with the camp manager you aim to ensure satisfied participants of the events.

It’s important to us that you are on top of health codes; adminstrate a safe and clean kitchen, and are able to serve the meals on the agreed times in an eastetically pleasing manner.

Our kitchen is situated in a custom made tent, and relies on wood heating for large pots, with a back-up gas stove. We only have cold running water and no electricity. Our previous cook was fond of baking sour-dough breads in our large earthen bread oven; we hope you are too!

Pay:
The job can be paid with around 1.000 per day of rented camp (incl. taxes etc.) If motivated you may want to rent the camp from PermaLot for 25.000 week (up to 25 people) incl. cook and food; arrange your own event, teachers etc. You'll be able to profit 32-42.000, depending on what your participants can pay and your external expenses.

Farming in PermaLot

…Permaculture, Fukuoka, bio-dynamic, forest- gardening, multi-functional agriculture, seed saving, agri-environment measures, land stewardship, bio-corridor, sustainability, partnership planting, organic agriculture, diverse range of speciality products…

-In case a majority of these terms have your attention, particulary in case you have a basic agriculture or gartner education and nowhere to utilise it and try out your dream, then please contact us!

We own 8,5 hectares of fully organic certified fields and orchards (located in 400 meters height near Olomouc) and are looking for someone to manage it all as soon as possible. We expect you to be able to present us with a 4-year plan for crop rotation, and to be able to run it all professionally in exchange of a high percentage of the profit.

We will be happy to help you with basic tools, processing and sale of final products, contacts for a machine station and volunteers as well as help with the official bureacracy involved in it all. We’re also able to offer a maringotka for basic accommodation, along with phone and water access.

It’s important for us that the involved work respects the local environment, that it’s demonstrating a model for local sustainability and that the landuse will have an educative effect in connection with our many other activities, attracting 200+ visitors per year.

Please read below for more information, and contact us if you’re interested tocome for a talk.

5 hectare Organic apple and jerabiny Orchard:
The orchard needs to be pruned, some more trees cut. It may give up to 20 tonnes of apples / 700 kg jerabiny. Some areas in it has been cleared for a different crop, fencing of 1 hectare is 75% finished; could likely keep dogs out next year and sheep in. With extra work it could also keep deer out.
The orchard needs to be tended and optimally have grass cut 2 times during season: We have a Brontosaurus team who'll come and syth it the first time in late June. Our grasscutter is small and bad; the solar tractor may be fixed (Electro steering is bad). We have boxes and tools etc. for manual harvest. It's important to us that the Orchard gets managed as demostration of permaculture/multi-functional agriculture.
Job: Someone to administrate the orchard; perhaps also in regards to certified sprays, fertilizer etc. Administrate the harvest and processing of it to final products; we have many contacts/some experience.
Pay: 75% of profit

2-hectare Organic field, Bouzov Svojanov:
The field is sloping slightly to the North, but gets sun all day. It's surrounded by 1.8 m fence and has 250 trees and bushes planted around it as a hedge. The trees was ploughed rough 2 years ago, somewhat leveled last year and planted with flax and oats, which unfortunately never got harvested: it's currently a green mulch. -With many happy birds. The field has poor quality soil: many small stones and much weed. It's not possible to access the field with a large combine harvester. Could be ideal for herbs? Perhaps simply grains if small combine can be secured?
Job: Farm it! Show that it's possible, preferable not just as a pasture for animals. Create final products? We'll buy some for the farm, PermaLot etc and can help with contacts.
Pay: Perhaps we can settle for a certain amount of help in the orchard as exchange?

1 hectare Meadow, Bouzov Svojanov:
We would like the field to be re-forested, but gave up on the grant-scheme as it wasn't worth the effort. Many more trees need to be planted; perhaps some grass cut to avoid the mice which kills the trees...This could be an ideal plase to establish a 'nuttery'; forest farming, ensuring pay-back in ...10 years?
Job: Take action!
Pay: In heaven..or in 10 years...?

Bouzov Podoli:

1 hectare Western sloping field by our farm: Not Organic
I believe the field is best suited for grazing and as a 'Nuttery'. The ridge above it should definitely have the old hedgerow reestablished. The field needs to be submitted as organic (2 years). A section near to house could be fenced in for vegie gardening: Poly tunnel could be made and some water supplied. The field is privately owned by Radka (and me!)
Job: Take action!
Pay: In heaven..or in 10 years...?.+ profit from grant schemes for planting hedge-row etc.

1 hectare Southern flat/ gently Southern sloping field South of the field above our farm: Not Organic
I believe the field is best suited for grazing and as a 'Nuttery'. The ridge above it should definitely have the old hedgerow restored. The field needs to be submitted as organic (2 years). Could be good for grazing, or for any grain/oil plant+??? The field is privately owned by Radka (and me!)
Job: Farm it!
Pay: 80 of profit+ profit from grant schemes for planting hedgerow etc.

Garden in Podoli:
Managed right the garden here would be able to give a lot of herbs or speciality foods that could bring a fair income as final products. You may be the person who could help Radka with it all?

In summery:
Making a living by farming the land owned by PermaLot or us is depending on your ambitions and willingness to be a real farmer. It will take inginuity, flexibility and a fair amount of work. In cases of finding the right products it may pay off well, other times the deer/frost may eat your crop. It's life as a farmer.
We may be able to help with other part time jobs, such as English teaching etc. We can help with local contacts, tools, office, graphic design, PermaLot logo etc.

In about a year we also hope to have a small kitchen certified for commercial production. This could be used for anything from jam to herbal soap; or simply apple juice?
